The Manistique River drains from Manistique Lake through the town of Germfask where it enters the Seney National Wildlife Refuge before continuing on to Lake Michigan at the town of Manistique. Gentle current and sandy shorelines make it suitable for paddlers of all abilities for day trips, or for 2 – 5 day wilderness camping/fishing trips. Most of the river flows through state land, with only a few parcels of private land along the way, making it one of the longest stretches of undeveloped river in Michigan. Camping is available at developed campgrounds or on sandy beaches along the riverbank, except within the Wildlife Refuge. Some brook trout are found in the upper part of the river, particularly near the mouth of the Fox River, while most of the river is more suited to pike, walleye and bass.
