Trail Description:

Big Cedar River – Logging along the Big Cedar River began in the 1840’s. Logs were floated downstream to the sawmill in the town of Cedar River. The lumbermen built dams along the river and it’s tributaries to impound the water to be used in flushing the logs downstream during the spring drives. The last log drives were in the early 1920’s. After the completion of the river drives, many logs remained stranded on banks, sand bars, and in deep pools. Many of these “deadheads” were salvaged during the depression era of the 1930’s, and some remain in the river to this day.
