Holly Recreation Area, located within the northern portion of Oakland County between Pontiac and Flint, is less than an hour's drive from the Detroit metropolitan area. The park's nearly 8,000 acres of rolling woodlands and open fields provides opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities.

Features:

  • Michigan State Park Explorer Program - Learn more about the natural features and resources located in this park with the Outdoor Explorer Program.
  • Hunting - Most areas of the park are open to hunting. Species include deer, turkey, waterfowl, rabbit and squirrel. Several thousand acres within the recreation area are maintained by the DNR Wildlife Division for wildlife habitat development and restoration.
  • Beach House - Provides clothes-changing area for swimmers.  
  • Swimming - Heron Lake provides 800 feet of sandy beach.
  • Fishing - Fishing piers are available on Valley and Heron Lakes. Shore fishing is available on Heron, Valley and Wildwood Lakes.
  • Canoe/Kayak Rental - Boat rentals are available from mid-May through mid-September. Row boats, canoes and fishing boats for your electric motor are available. Call 248-634-8931 or the park office at 248-634-8811 for more information.
  • Picnic Area - Picnic tables and fire pits/grills. The Lakeview Picnic area provides a scenic overlook, multiple picnic tables and grills and access to the Lakeshore Trail.
  • Picnic Shelter(s) - Three shelters are available for group use by reservation or on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 248-634-8811 to make reservations.
  • Alcohol Restrictions Apply - Alcohol may not be possessed or consumed in the day-use areas south of McGinnis Road from April 1 through Labor Day without the written authorization of the park manager.
  • Hiking - Approximately 34 miles of trails available for hiking throughout the park. For more information on hiking activities at Holly Recreation Area and other southeastern Michigan State Parks click here to visit HikingMichigan.com.
  • Mountain Biking - More than 23 miles of mountain bike trails in five loops located in the Holdridge Lakes area provide terrain from easy to advanced. This trail system was designed, built and is maintained by the Holly/Flint Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association. Mountain bikes are prohibited from the hiking and cross-country trails in the central portion of the park.
  • Snowmobile Area - Allowed with 4" of snow or more on the ground. Snowmobiling is allowed only in areas west of I-75.
  • Boating Access Site/Launch - Access for boating and fishing. The park maintains boat launches on Heron, Valley and Crotched lakes. Heron Lake has an electric motors only restriction. Gas motors are allowed at Wildwood and Valley, but a NO WAKE restriction applies throughout both lakes.
  • Cross Country Ski - Approximately ten miles of trails are located in the central portion of the recreation area. Trails are not groomed.
  • Metal Detecting Areas - Metal detecting is recognized as a legitimate recreation activity when it is conducted in ways that do not damage the natural and cultural resources in Michigan State Parks nor violate applicable state statutes. If you wish to use a metal detector in this state park, here is a map that shows clearly where this activity may take place. Any items found must be reviewed by park staff and may be retained for further investigation.
